Hemivertebrae is due to the abnormally shaped bones of the spine that disrupt the proper alignment. This misalignment can cause abnormal compression or pressure on the cartilaginous discs of the spinal column. This can lead to nerve damage, weakness, pain, incontinence, mobility issues, etc. Though it can be a severe diagnosis, hemivertebrae at times may not affect your French Bulldog but simply be an incidental finding. Regardless, the French Bulldog should be able to run and play, but jumping on and off objects should be restricted to prevent back injuries.

In between your French Bulldog's Vertebrae, there are intervertebral discs that allow fluidity so your dog can bend and turn. As your French Bulldog ages, these discs can calcify, or if there is constant pressure that squeezes these discs, the discs can herniate and cause acute paralysis, depending on which disc is affected. Mild cases can be treated by restricting activity, but more severe cases may quickly require surgery to remove the herniated disc to relieve pressure on the spinal cord. Keeping your French Bulldog at a healthy weight to reduce additional pressure on their back as well as preventing them from aimless jumping will reduce the chance of them getting IVDD. If at any point your pet is unable to use their back legs or is dragging their limbs, please go to your veterinarian immediately.
