Meet Bowie 💙
Bowie is a sweet, fun-loving puppy who is ready to find his forever family! He loves to run, play, and spend time with all of his foster friends. He is currently working on potty training and, like any puppy, is learning more every day.
Bowie does have an orthopedic history that his future family should be aware of. Prior to coming into our care, Bowie sustained a right lateral humeral condylar fracture, meaning he broke his right elbow. At this time, he is not a surgical candidate and has developed some arthritis in the affected elbow. However, you certainly wouldn't know it from watching him! Bowie continues to use his right leg to walk, run, and play and does not currently show signs that his previous injury is affecting his quality of life. You may occasionally notice him bend or hold this leg up while he is sitting, not in pain or discomfort, and when he's up and moving, he's ready to go!
Because Bowie is comfortably using the leg, amputation is not recommended at this time. He does not currently require steroids or pain medication. Joint supplements are recommended to support his long-term joint health, and he is currently taking Cosequin Joint Supplement.
There is a possibility that Bowie's elbow could become more problematic as he gets older and that amputation may be recommended in the future. Unfortunately, there is no crystal ball to tell us whether that will be a couple of years from now—or whether he may happily use this leg for the rest of his life without ever needing an amputation. For now, the recommendation is simply to monitor him and allow Bowie to continue being the happy, active puppy that he is.
As with all French Bulldogs, we recommend limiting jumping, particularly jumping down from furniture or other elevated surfaces, to help protect his joints and spine and reduce the risk of future injury.
Bowie isn't letting his past slow him down. He's a happy, playful little guy who loves his dog friends and is ready for a family to call his own. His forever family will simply need to understand his orthopedic history, continue to keep an eye on his elbow as he grows, and be prepared for the possibility that his needs could change in the future.
For now, Bowie has much more important things on his mind—playing, making friends, perfecting his potty-training skills, and finding his forever home. 💙🐾
