Similar to humans, ear infections can cause irritation. French Bulldogs can develop ear infections due to allergies, bacterial or fungal overgrowth, aural foreign bodies, or excessive moisture down in the ear canal. French Bulldog's ears are usually upright and are more prone to dirt collection. If your French Bulldog presents with their ear tilted to the side, if they are shaking their head or scratching at their ear, if there is an unpleasant odor or discharge, it is recommended to see your nearest vet. If your French Bulldog is prone to ear infections, sometimes it is recommended to try to use an ear cleaning solution once a week for prevention of infection. Consistent ear infections and trauma from scratching at their ears can result in hematomas or a collection of blood adjacent to the ear cartilage. If there is a lack of distribution of blood supply to healthy cartilage, "cauliflower" ear can become present - which is common in people who wrestle or box. If a dog has several ear infections and the middle ear canal becomes thickened and is not responding to medications, an operation called a Total Ear Canal ablation can help reduce the inflammation and pain.
Deafness is not uncommon in French Bulldogs, with white French Bulldogs being more affected. Deaf French Bulldogs can live a normal life once they and their person are able to find a routine and consistency.
