The adorable wrinkles and folds on a French Bulldog can be a potential cause of Dermatitis. The folds can collect heat and moisture to which the folds constantly rub against each other and can create the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast. These folds can develop redness and inflammation, discomfort, ulcers or lesions, and even an odor. Proper cleaning of these skin folds with medicated wipes, keeping the skin dry, and even dietary changes can significantly reduce the chance of developing Skin Fold Dermatitis.
According to the National Library of Medicine, the most common food allergies in dogs are beef, dairy, chicken, and wheat. However, environmental allergies can stem from pollen, dust mites, and mold. When the body associates an allergy, it releases antibodies to tell the body that a foreign object is present that shouldn't be there, so an allergic reaction can occur. These reactions present with itchiness, redness, and swelling. Pyoderma is a bacterial infection that becomes presents after there is an injury to the skin whether from long exposure to moisture, the normal skin bacteria has been changed, blood flow impairment, or if there has been suppression in your French Bulldog's immune system. Skin Fold Dermatitis can cause Pyoderma. Presentation of Pyoderma can look like pimples on humans, sometimes filled with pus. After rupture, flaking, crushing, and visible hairless spots may occur. Treatment for this condition will be antibiotics.
